Check valves are installed into the bottom of Pop-Up riser stems to stop water from leaking and draining out of lower-elevation sprinklers – referred to as low-head drainage.  This occurs after the sprinkler valve shuts off. Check valves are usually always necessary when there are grade elevation differences but only on the lower-elevation sprinklers.  Price per each in 25/ct bags is 90 cents. It is less costly but also less easier to buy the bag and install them yourself rather than have them factory-installed. Installation is easy but the pop-up stem must be removed from the housing in order to install check valve.
